Column
Radiators:
A Complete Guide
Style, sizing, heat output and everything you need to know before choosing a column radiator for your home.
Shop Column RadiatorsWhat is a column radiator?
A column radiator is constructed from a series of vertical tubes arranged into sections. Unlike the flatter surface of a conventional panel radiator, these columns create a distinctive three-dimensional design with plenty of surface area from which heat can be transferred into the room.
Although their appearance takes inspiration from traditional cast iron radiators, many modern column radiators are manufactured from steel. This allows you to achieve the classic column look while benefiting from materials suited to contemporary heating systems.
Their versatility is one of their biggest attractions, with horizontal and vertical designs, different depths, sizes and finishes to suit both traditional and modern homes.
What do 2 column, 3 column and 4 column mean?
The number doesn't refer to the number of upright sections you can see across the front of the radiator. It describes how many columns deep the radiator is when viewed from the side.
A slimmer profile, ideal where you don't want the radiator projecting too far into the room.
A deeper design offering a useful balance between projection and heat output.
A deeper design with a greater surface area, ideal where higher heat output is required.
Are column radiators efficient?
Column radiators can provide excellent heat output. Their multiple tubes create a large surface area for heat transfer, while the spaces between the columns allow warmed air to circulate through convection.
However, simply choosing the largest radiator won't inherently make your heating system more economical. The key is selecting a radiator with an appropriate output for the room and operating it as part of a correctly designed and controlled heating system.

Understanding BTU when choosing a radiator
Radiator output is commonly displayed in BTU/h (British Thermal Units per hour) and/or watts. The output you require depends on factors including the dimensions of the room, insulation, external walls, windows and other sources of heat loss.
A BTU calculator can provide a useful starting point. Once you know the approximate requirement, you can compare it against the stated output of individual radiators.

Horizontal or vertical column radiator?
One of the advantages of modern column radiators is the choice between horizontal and vertical configurations.
Horizontal
Column Radiators
- Ideal beneath windows
- Works well in larger rooms
- Perfect for period properties
- Available in a wide range of widths
Vertical
Column Radiators
- Perfect for narrow wall spaces
- Great for kitchens and hallways
- Makes a striking design feature
- Available in a range of heights
Do column radiators only suit traditional homes?
Definitely not. White column radiators create a classic look that works beautifully in traditional bathrooms, Victorian-style interiors and period properties.
But changing the finish completely transforms their character. Anthracite and black column radiators look striking in contemporary interiors, while a range of other colours and finishes allow you to match your radiator to your style.
Where can you use a column radiator?
Column radiators aren't restricted to living rooms or hallways. They can be used throughout the home.
Living Rooms &
Dining Rooms
Complement the proportions of a spacious room, especially in period properties.
Bedrooms
Slimmer 2 or 3 column models provide the traditional look without projecting excessively into the room.
Kitchens
A vertical column radiator makes use of narrow wall space where cabinets and appliances take up room.
Hallways & Landings
Tall vertical models are ideal where floor and wall space is limited.
Bathrooms
A stylish heating solution alongside or instead of a heated towel rail.
What should you check before buying?
Calculate the BTU requirement for your room.
Check the size, depth and projection from the wall.
Consider your existing pipework and valves.
Ensure the wall can safely support the radiator.
Use a qualified heating professional if you're unsure.
Choosing the right column radiator
The best column radiator is a balance of heat output, available space and design. Start with the heating requirement, then narrow your options by height, width and number of columns before choosing the orientation and finish that work best with your interior.
With options ranging from classic white horizontal radiators to tall anthracite and black designs, column radiators offer something relatively unusual in home heating: a practical product that can also become part of the interior design.
