How to bleed your radiator in 5 easy steps

As the winter is now approaching many of you like me are switching on your radiators for the first time in quite a few months after our very hot summer we had!

If you find your radiators are lacking in heat or they are cold at the top and warm at the bottom, then it maybe a case that your radiators require bleeding.

Radiator bleeding is simply a case of releasing the trapped air from inside the radiator.

With these simple steps, we explain how you can bleed your radiators to get your home back up to heat without the need for a plumber.

1 -Turn off your heating

Ensure the heating throughout your home is switched off before you start the bleeding process.

2- Locate your bleed valve & Key

Your radiator will come with a bleed key – don’t worry if you have misplaced yours, you can easily get yourself one here -

Locating the bleed valve, this maybe at the top or bottom of the radiator. You will know when you have found the right place as the key will fit the valve.

3 – Bleeding the radiator

Slowly open the bleed valve anti-clockwise and listen out for the air leaving the radiator, once you hear the air leaving the radiator do not open the valve anymore. When small drips of water show then this is a sign that there is no air is remaining.

4 – Closing the valve

Close the valve clockwise and ensure that the valve is tightened and closed and no water is coming from the valve.

5 – You're all done.

Turn your heating back on. After some time check back on your radiator to ensure that the valve is not leaking, and the radiator is now warming up properly.
